President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea has praised Ghana for its consistent efforts in safeguarding South Korean nationals and vessels operating within the strategically important Gulf of Guinea.
During bilateral talks with Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, on Wednesday, March 11, President Lee expressed deep appreciation for Ghana’s role in promoting maritime safety in the region, where piracy and maritime crimes remain a concern.
According to reports from the Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean leader acknowledged Ghana’s proactive cooperation in helping secure shipping routes and protect foreign nationals working along the West African coast.
“Ghana is a country we are grateful to, as it has actively cooperated in ensuring the safety of Korean nationals in the Gulf of Guinea, where piracy threats persist,” President Lee stated during his opening remarks.
Ghana Recognised as Strategic Gateway to Africa
President Lee also highlighted Ghana’s geographical and economic importance, describing the country as a reliable gateway for South Korea’s expansion into African markets.
The Gulf of Guinea plays a vital role in global maritime trade, serving as a major shipping corridor for international commerce. Ghana’s stability and commitment to regional security, Lee noted, make it an important partner for South Korea’s engagement across the continent.
New Agreements to Strengthen Cooperation
The meeting between the two leaders also produced several agreements aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries.
Among the key agreements signed were:
Climate Change Cooperation
Both nations signed a pact to establish a legal framework for collaboration on climate action, aligning their national policies with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Maritime Security Partnership
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Korea Coast Guard and the Ghana Navy to strengthen intelligence sharing on international maritime crimes. The agreement will focus on combating piracy, drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, and improving maritime search and rescue operations.
Technology and Digital Cooperation
The two countries also signed an agreement to collaborate in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and youth training programs. The partnership aims to improve digital access and technological capacity in Ghana while opening avenues for knowledge exchange between both nations.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The discussions mark another step in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and South Korea. Both leaders expressed optimism that continued cooperation in security, climate action, and technology would further deepen their partnership in the coming years.
For Ghana, the agreements signal growing international recognition of its role in promoting stability in West Africa, while also opening new opportunities in digital innovation and climate collaboration.
As maritime security challenges continue to affect global shipping routes, the renewed partnership between the two nations underscores the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding the Gulf of Guinea.
