The Ministry of Transport (Ghana) has announced that renovation works at Terminal 2 of Kotoka International Airport are expected to be completed by July 2026, as part of efforts to improve passenger flow and modernize Ghana’s aviation infrastructure.
The $18 million remodelling project will transform Terminal 2 into a facility capable of handling both domestic and international flights, helping to reduce the increasing congestion currently being experienced at Terminal 3.
Government Inspects Progress of Works
During an inspection tour of the project site on Wednesday, March 11, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, visited the facility alongside airline operators to assess the progress made by contractors.
Speaking after the tour, the minister expressed optimism that the project would be delivered on schedule.
“We are here today to inspect the works the contractors are doing to remodel Terminal 2, enabling it to serve both Ghanaians and international passengers. We have toured the facility with the airlines and have seen the progress,” he said.
He added that the government expects the contractors to complete the project by July, allowing Terminal 2 to begin operating as a dual-purpose terminal.
Airport Name to Change
The minister also revealed that the project will introduce new signage at the airport. Once the renovation is completed, the current name Kotoka International Airport will be replaced with “Accra International Airport.”
“By the time we are done in July, the name will be replaced with Accra International Airport,” Mr. Nikpe stated.
Warning to Private Jet Terminal Operators
In addition, the transport minister issued a warning to operators at the airport’s private jet terminal, stating that the government will revoke the licences of individuals or groups that fail to renew their operational permits.
Authorities say the move is part of ongoing efforts to ensure strict regulatory compliance and improve operational standards within Ghana’s aviation sector.
Boosting Ghana’s Aviation Sector
The remodelling of Terminal 2 forms part of broader plans by the government to strengthen Ghana’s position as a key aviation hub in West Africa, while improving the overall passenger experience at one of the region’s busiest airports.
Once completed, the upgraded terminal is expected to significantly reduce pressure on Terminal 3 and enhance the efficiency of airport operations in Accra.
